The French Ardennes: Between the Vosges and the Thierache
The French Ardennes form wide parts of the Belgian-French border region and stretch out around the rivers Meuse, Oise, Sormonne and Aisne towards parts of the regions of Champagne-Ardenne, Picardy and Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Further to the west the region Lorraine with Vosges Mountains joins up. Especially the largest part of the Department Ardennes in the region of Champagne-Ardenne is formed by the offshoots of the mountains. Here to the north of the town Charleville-Mézières you will find the ravine of the Meuse which crosses the Ardennes in the direction of Namur. Here in the heart of the French Ardennes the town of Sedan is quite an attraction.
Further to the west the Ardennes merge in the departments Aisne and Nord into the landscape of the Thierache. Here the offshoots of the Ardennes become clearly flatter however retain their charm with vast forested range of hills. Particularly worth seeing towns are Hirson, Vervins and Guise.
Day trips from a holiday home
There are also some worthwhile places to visit around the French Ardennes which are ideal for a day trip or can be recommended for a vacation. Should you not be able to find a suitable domicile in the French Ardennes it might be worth browsing in the neighbouring regions. A wide selection of holiday apartments and houses on atraveo can for example be found in the Belgian Ardennes and in the other mountainous regions of the High Fens. With Liege, Namur and Charleroi there are also some nice town to visit.
South of the French Ardennes the landscape of Champagne joins up – the region where the drink Champagne got its name from. Centre and very popular destination in this region is the traditional town Reims which was formerly the coronation place of French kings. Here you can go on a nice stroll and discover the lovely old historic centre. Further interesting towns in the area between the Ardennes and Champagne are Rethel and Vouziers as well as further south Troyes and Epernay.
With Metz und Verdun you can find further east other interesting cities in the region Lorraine. Verdun is probably familiar due to being the place of one of the fierce battlegrounds during World War I. Today the war cemetery and tower are a reminder of the costs of this episode.
Very much towards the east where the last Ardennes offshoots have disappeared into the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais lie Roubaix and Lille. Roubaix is not only a nice town but also a synonym for one of the oldest and most difficult cycling races on the international calendar: On race between Paris and Roubaix one has to overcome challenging cobblestones passages referred to as "Pavés". Why don’t you combine a vacation in this region with a visit of "Five monuments of the cycling"? Paris-Roubaix takes place annually at the beginning of April during the best vacation period.
