Holiday apartment with a panoramic view and insight into Sicilian customs and traditions, in an ecologically-run villa
The holiday apartment is part of a villa from the early 19th century. The villa is located in the town of Acireale, whose history goes back to Greek antiquity. At the time a river and the watermill road ran through the present-day town. The Greek colony Akis, present-day Acireale, was established along this watermill road. The villa is located on the hill that rises up about the Capomulini Gulf, 2km to the south of Acitrezzo. Capomulini Gulf once served as a harbour and was a setting for the Odyssey.
The holiday apartment is an independent unit within the owners’ villa. It comprises a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom with a shower, and two bedrooms. There is a sofa bed in the living room, and the two bedrooms each have a double bed. The kitchen is equipped with four cooking rings, an oven, a microwave, a mixer, a kettle and a coffee machine. The apartment provides wireless Internet access and a television. A cot can be provided on request. From the apartment you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Costa dei Ciclopi and the Capo dei Mulini lighthouse, as well as of the land belonging to the property. In the morning you are woken up by the twittering of birds and a new day begins, in which you can enjoy life and rural customs. On arrival, guests are greeted with a fruit and vegetable basket, freshly picked in the garden, and jams and honey produced by selected local farms. The gift basket also has a sample of olive oil produced on site.
The villa lies in the midst of a cultivation area of nearly two hectares, where citrus and olive trees grow. Guests can go on beautiful walks here and enjoy the scent of citrus. The property has two accesses: one is for cars with parking spaces, the other dates back to old times and provides access on foot. The latter provides access to the 300m² garden of the villa. You can enjoy the warmth of the Sicilian sunshine and the aromas of nature in the shade of a century-old grapevine. The area is furnished with a table, parasol and other garden furniture, so that you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner outdoors. Upon arrival, guests are provided with a barbecue with a filled sack of charcoal.
The owner cultivates fruit and vegetables in organic quality for his own use. You are welcome to harvest the fruit and vegetables for yourself. On request, guests can use a rustic room with a wood-burning oven, kitchen, tables and chairs. Rubbish is separated in the villa. The whole villa is supplied with ecofriendly electricity by 40 solar modules. On request, you can help to can tomato sauce and peeled tomatoes and to assist with the olive harvest. The owners thereby revive old Sicilian traditions and the products are only for their own consumption. It is possible to arrange transfers to and from Catania airport. Mountain bikes can be hired. The owners speak Italian, English and Spanish.
1.5km away there is a grocery shop, and a fishmonger 0.8km away. From the villa you can walk to the archaeological sites of Santa Venera al Pozzo (15 minutes), with the ancient Roman thermal springs, and to Reitana (25 minutes) as the only cultivation area for lupins. In the village of Baracche just a five-minute walk away there is a pizzeria worth seeing, located in an old mill. The baroque town of Acireale is 4km away. The town has a train station and can be accessed by public bus. The bus stop is 0.5km from the villa. The owners, who are mountain enthusiasts, are happy to arrange a trip to Etna with an authorised guide. Taormina is 38km away and can be accessed via the motorway. Siracusa is 60 minutes away on the motorway. Scicli and Punta Secca, film sets for the Commissario Montalbano series that is famous in Italy, are 90 minutes away. The town of Catania, known for its nightlife and its baroque style, is just 10km away. The fish market in Acitrezza and the club of the same name (mercato del pesce) are just 2km away.
